What is an International Driver's License?

An International Driver's License is a document that allows you to drive a motor vehicle legally in 174 countries when it is accompanied by your valid original driver's license. The International Driver’s License translation document helps to interpret your domestic government issued driver license and could be useful for car rental and car insurance in many countries. It became a useful advantage for motorists who are traveling overseas and can drive in different territory without experiencing difficulties with various language barriers. You can get an International Driver’s License if you met the following requirements:

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must have a valid and active driver’s license issued by a government agency
• Must submit: a color photo, a copy of both sides of you driver's license/permit and a signature

International Driver’s License is printed in multiple languages: the six United Nations official languages (English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Chinese) as well as German, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Greek, Farsi and Korean. International Driving Permits issued by governmental agencies or private organizations designated by a country's government are the only official translations of a person's driver's license and should be issued in the country of native driver's license. IDL has no official status and does not confer any legal privileges or rights on consumers therefore when traveling always carry your government issued native valid driver license, obey local rules and regulations.

An international driving permit (IDP) allows you to drive legally in 174 countries when it is accompanied by your valid US driver's license. You are eligible for an IDP if you are a permanent resident at least 18 years of age and have a driver's license that will remain valid for at least six months from the date of issuance of the IDP.

Your IDP does not allow you to drive legally in every country, just in those countries that recognize it. Notably absent from this list is the People's Republic of China. (To drive legally in China, you must have a driver's license issued by China.)

Many countries don't recognize national driver's licences as valid driver identification and in this case you need to obtain an International Driver’s License or Permit.

In the United States, only two organizations issue international driver's licenses (permits): the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). The US State Department has advised drivers to obtain them from AAA or AATA. The US Federal Trade Commission has warned that any other organization is likely running a scam. You don't have to be a member of AAA or AATA to obtain an international driver's license from that organization. You can apply in person at your local AAA branch.. Alternatively, you can mail the application and supporting documentation to the AAA or AATA.
